Look around outside.

Ground Floor

Enter the home through a large screened-in porch. It takes up one fourth of the ground floor and has large, insulated glass garage doors that lead into the kitchen and the living room. When those doors are rolled up and out of the way, the whole downstairs feels open to the outside!

The top photo shows the view from the porch out to the garden and beyond. There's a gravel path from the door to the garden for easy harvesting - even in muddy weather.

Here you can look from the porch into the kitchen.

And here's a view from the porch into the living room.

We'll enter through the living room.

The house has an open floor plan, so from the living room you can see into the dining room and kitchen. (There's radiant heat in that polished concrete floor - it's toasty warm in winter.)

We'll head into the dining room. Turn around to look back and you can see more of the living room. There are lots of windows and a cozy wood stove.

Turn back around and take a closer look at the super-functional kitchen. There's great light, plenty of counter space, and easy access open shelves - plus Julia Child inspired pegboard to have all your favorite tools in easy reach.

This is the kitchen from a different angle so you can see what it looks like with the big door closed.

That glowing blue room straight ahead is a half bath with a pocket door leading into it.

Let's take another look at the dining room and then head upstairs.

That door leads to a gravel path along the edge of the cleared part of the property and to the road.

Second Floor

The second floor has a large studio/office/bonus room, a bedroom, and a full bathroom.

First - let's look down from the top of the stairs.

There's the dining room and kitchen on the ground floor.

If you look straight across the dining room you'll see a library loft.

You can reach it by a pull-down stair. :-)

Now we'll head into the large office/studio/bonus room.

This room is BIG - 16 feet x 32 feet. In these photos it holds a large cutting table, a sewing table, a large desk, another work surface, a couch and lots of storage space.

There are loads of windows for natural light from three directions, two ceiling fans, and a cathedral ceiling over half the room.

There's also a washer/dryer hookup and a deep sink.

That doorway leads to the bedroom on this floor. (You can't see the bedroom door in this photo - but it used to be the door to the Penland store!)

The bedroom is large.

There's a full bathroom. . .

. . .with a great claw foot tub.

This cozy nook in the bedroom isn't visible from the door.

It backs right up to the woods so the breeze is always cool and shady.

Turn around and head out of the bedroom and back into the studio. . .

. . . and up those stairs.

Third Floor

From the top of the stairs you can look down to the second floor and see half of that studio space.

If you look left you can see windows to the top screened in porch. We'll get there in a minute.

At the top of the stairs you enter a really nice office space.

Those windows are right in the tree tops.

From the office you walk right into the master bedroom. It's huge.

There's a hotel-style master bathroom. . .

. . . with an oversized tiled shower - with a window in it!

The toilet is in a separate room.

Here's the best part of the third floor - a large screened porch with a hot tub, ceiling fan, and terrific views.

The corner of this porch has an important reminder. :-)

Head back through the French doors and into the master bedroom.

These double doors, the cathedral ceilings and three ceiling fans all keep the top floor cool and breezy.

Outside

The house is on 1.72 acres - half of which is wooded.

The cleared part has a few ornamental trees (redbuds and dogwoods) and lots of fruits and nuts.
  • cherries
  • apples
  • chestnuts
  • hazelnuts
  • blueberries
  • thornless blackberries
  • grapes
  • rhubarb
There's also a large garden with raised beds, surrounded by a chicken run for easy weed disposal. :-) Here's a view of the garden through the screen of the top floor porch.

The chicken coop is located on the far side of the garden away from the house. It's the building on the left with the purple door.

The building on the right is a terrific storage shed - one of two on the property. (The second shed is a less-terrific basic tool/garden shed.)

Here's a peek at the inside.

The property is completely private. You can't see any other houses from anywhere on the property, and it's the only house on the street, so there's no traffic.

It's pretty awesome.
